India Raises China Business Visa Hurdles as Firms Face Travel Disruptions
India has raised concerns with China over difficulties faced by Indian companies in obtaining business visas for executives, engineers and technical specialists, the Ministry of External Affairs said on September 8. The move comes as New Delhi seeks to gradually normalise economic and people-to-people ties with Beijing.
Key Details & Background
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India-China relations are moving in a positive direction and that visa-related issues are part of restoring broader people-to-people connectivity.
Indian companies have reported difficulties obtaining Chinese business visas for senior executives, engineers, technical personnel and sales and management teams. Some firms have consequently shifted meetings with Chinese counterparts to third countries such as Singapore.
Industry body ASSOCHAM has also urged the government to resolve the issue through bilateral discussions with Beijing, warning that restrictions on the movement of technical personnel could affect technology transfers, manufacturing operations and supply chains.
Key Takeaways
- Diplomatic Engagement: India has raised business visa difficulties with China as part of efforts to improve bilateral ties.
- Business Disruptions: Visa problems are affecting executives, engineers and technical teams, with some meetings being shifted to third countries.
- Economic Balancing Act: India is selectively easing investment restrictions while continuing to maintain scrutiny over China-linked economic activities.
Why This Matters
The visa issue highlights a major challenge in rebuilding India-China economic engagement. Indian manufacturers continue to rely on Chinese machinery, components, technology and technical expertise, meaning easier movement of business personnel could be important for smoother supply chains and investment.
