Fuel prices across India have surged after Nayara Energy announced a significant hike in petrol and diesel rates, citing rising global energy costs amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Petrol prices have increased by up to ₹5.30 per liter, while diesel rates have risen by around ₹3 per liter. The price variation differs across states due to local taxes such as VAT, leading to slightly different retail rates in each city.
The hike comes against the backdrop of disruptions in global oil supply chains, largely influenced by escalating tensions involving Iran and the United States. Concerns over restricted oil movement through the Strait of Hormuz have added further pressure on fuel prices worldwide.
Following the announcement, reports of panic buying emerged from several parts of the country. Long queues were seen at petrol pumps in cities like Prayagraj and Guwahati, as consumers rushed to refill tanks amid fears of shortages. Similar scenes were reported at LPG distribution centers.
Nayara Energy, which operates nearly 7,000 fuel stations across India and is majority-owned by Rosneft, reportedly passed on increased input costs to consumers due to mounting losses. Unlike state-run oil companies, private retailers do not receive government compensation to absorb such cost pressures.

Despite government assurances that there is no fuel shortage, panic buying has been reported in several regions, especially in Assam. Social media rumors have further fueled public concern, leading to long queues at fuel stations.
Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the government’s handling of the situation, alleging that authorities were unprepared for the emerging energy crisis. He also warned of further price increases in the near future.
As global tensions continue to impact oil supply, experts caution that fuel prices in India may remain volatile in the coming weeks.
