Jayant Chaudhary Rajya Sabha Move: BJP-RLD Plan Could Reshape UP Politics Before 2027
The BJP's upcoming Rajya Sabha nominations from Uttar Pradesh could have wider political implications, with RLD chief and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary reportedly being considered for a BJP-backed seat despite already holding a Rajya Sabha membership until 2028.

Jayant Chaudhary Rajya Sabha Move: BJP-RLD Plan Could Reshape UP Politics Before 2027
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Rajya Sabha nominations for Uttar Pradesh are yet to be announced, but speculation around one potential candidate has already drawn attention to the BJP's alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
RLD chief and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary is reportedly among the names being considered for a Rajya Sabha seat from the BJP quota in the October 16 election. The possibility is notable because Chaudhary is already a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh, with his current term scheduled to continue until July 2028.
Chaudhary entered the Rajya Sabha in 2022 with support from the Samajwadi Party. He is now aligned with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and serves as a Union minister.
Why Jayant's Possible Switch Matters
If the BJP nominates Chaudhary for one of its Rajya Sabha seats, he would have to give up his existing membership before taking up the new seat.
That could potentially create an opportunity for the RLD to retain representation in the Upper House for the remainder of the existing term. Reports have suggested that Chaudhary's wife, Charu Chaudhary, could be considered for the vacancy, although no final decision has been announced.
Another possibility is that the RLD could nominate a senior party leader to the seat.
The reported plan could therefore allow the BJP to accommodate an important NDA ally while also maintaining RLD representation in Parliament ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
BJP Expected to Win Eight Seats
Ten Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh are scheduled to be contested on October 16. Based on the current strength of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the BJP-led NDA is expected to win eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party is projected to secure two.
Seven sitting BJP Rajya Sabha members are completing their terms. Another seat became vacant after former BJP MP Dinesh Sharma resigned following his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The BJP's numerical advantage gives the party considerable flexibility while finalising its candidates.
BJP's Possible Candidates
Several names are reportedly being discussed within the BJP for the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha election. These include former Union minister Smriti Irani, former MP Harish Dwivedi and former BJP leader Varun Gandhi, among others.
The final list is expected to determine whether the BJP uses one of its nominations to strengthen its alliance with the RLD or opts for another political combination.
