Vadodara-Ratlam Rail Expansion: Two New Lines Planned, Vishwamitri-Dabhoi to Get Double Track

Rail connectivity across Gujarat and adjoining Madhya Pradesh is poised for a major capacity upgrade, with Western Railway planning additional tracks on the Vadodara-Ratlam route and a separate doubling project proposed between Vishwamitri and Dabhoi.

The two projects are aimed at addressing capacity constraints, improving train movement and creating greater operational flexibility for both passenger and freight services.

Vadodara-Ratlam to get third and fourth lines

Nearly 259 km of the Vadodara-Ratlam railway section is planned to receive two additional tracks, taking the route beyond its existing capacity.

The route is an important rail link between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh and connects into a wider network carrying traffic toward the Delhi-Mumbai corridor.

Because passenger and freight trains share the route, additional tracks could allow railway authorities to manage different types of traffic more efficiently. Extra lines can also provide greater flexibility for scheduling, train crossings and maintenance work without disrupting services on the entire section.

The proposed third and fourth lines are therefore expected to strengthen the capacity of a strategically important railway route and support smoother train operations.

Vishwamitri-Dabhoi line to be doubled

A second railway capacity project is planned closer to Vadodara on the 33-km Vishwamitri-Dabhoi section.

The existing route is a single-line section, meaning trains travelling in opposite directions have limited opportunities to pass and railway operations can face capacity constraints.

The proposed doubling project has an estimated cost of ₹394 crore. Once a second track is added, trains should have greater flexibility to move in both directions, potentially reducing operational bottlenecks and improving the handling of additional services.

Better rail access toward the Statue of Unity

The Vishwamitri-Dabhoi route also has significance for passenger connectivity toward the Statue of Unity, one of Gujarat's major tourist attractions.

As visitor traffic and demand for rail services in the region develop, additional track capacity could make it easier to operate trains and manage passenger movement.

The doubling project could consequently support both everyday rail operations and tourism-related connectivity.

More capacity for passengers and freight

The two projects address different but connected infrastructure requirements around Vadodara.

The much larger Vadodara-Ratlam expansion is expected to provide additional capacity on a key Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh route, while Vishwamitri-Dabhoi doubling will remove the limitations of a single-track section.

For passengers, the additional infrastructure could translate into greater scope for train services and more flexible scheduling. For freight operators, additional track capacity could help improve the movement of goods through an important regional rail network.

The projects also come at a time when expanding railway capacity is increasingly important for supporting economic activity, industrial movement and tourism across western India.

Taken together, the proposed works represent a significant expansion of rail infrastructure in and around Vadodara.
