US-Iran Ceasefire Talks in Doubt as Tensions Rise Ahead of Islamabad Meeting

Ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran are facing uncertainty even before formally beginning, as both sides exchange fresh warnings and disagreements.

Officials confirmed that the US delegation has departed for Islamabad, while Iranian representatives have already arrived to participate in the high-stakes discussions.

The talks follow a recently announced ceasefire intended to pause hostilities involving US and Israeli forces against Iran. However, the agreement has quickly become a source of contention, with both sides presenting conflicting interpretations of its terms.

A major sticking point remains whether the ceasefire includes Israeli military operations in Lebanon. Iranian officials insist that any halt in fighting must extend to Lebanon, while ambiguity from the US side has fueled mistrust.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliamentary speaker, warned that the talks could collapse if key conditions are not met. He stated that two critical measures must be implemented before negotiations proceed: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s frozen financial assets.

Iran’s leadership has reiterated that discussions will only move forward if Washington accepts these preconditions, further complicating the diplomatic process.

Meanwhile, Iran’s military has issued strong warnings, signaling readiness to respond to any perceived violations. Officials cited repeated “breaches of trust” as a reason for maintaining a high state of alert.

On the US side, Donald Trump struck a more aggressive tone, indicating continued military preparedness and warning of severe consequences if tensions escalate further.

The developments highlight the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the deep distrust between both sides. With conflicting demands and ongoing military posturing, the success of the Islamabad talks remains uncertain.
