US-Iran Talks Collapse After 21 Hours in Islamabad, No Breakthrough Reached

High-level negotiations between the United States and Iran have ended without a breakthrough after more than 21 hours of intense discussions in Islamabad.

JD Vance confirmed that both sides failed to reach an agreement, stating that Washington’s key conditions were not accepted by Tehran. He emphasized that the US had clearly outlined its “red lines,” particularly regarding nuclear commitments.

The talks brought together senior officials, including US envoys and an Iranian delegation led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, along with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The primary goal was to find a pathway to end the ongoing conflict and extend a fragile ceasefire.

Key Disputes

Major disagreements emerged over critical issues, especially Iran’s nuclear program and control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The US demanded firm assurances that Iran would not pursue nuclear weapons or develop capabilities to rapidly produce them. Washington also pushed for unrestricted global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

On the other hand, Iran reportedly sought broader concessions, including sanctions relief, release of frozen assets, influence over the strategic waterway, and a wider regional ceasefire that includes Lebanon.

While US officials described their approach as flexible, Iranian state media accused Washington of making “unreasonable demands” that blocked progress.

Reports suggest Tehran is not currently planning another round of talks, signaling a possible pause in diplomatic efforts.
