Delhi Rain Disrupts Flights: 15 Aircraft Diverted as IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alerts

Heavy rain and thunderstorms brought parts of Delhi to a standstill on Monday, disrupting air travel and affecting traffic movement across the national capital.

The bad weather forced 15 flights scheduled to operate through Delhi airport to be diverted, including three international flights, as poor conditions affected arrivals and departures.

Of the diverted flights, 12 were sent to Jaipur, while two were diverted to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow.

Delhi Airport Operations Hit by Severe Weather

The disruption came after intense showers swept through several parts of Delhi, particularly South Delhi and surrounding areas.

With visibility and weather conditions affecting flight operations, airlines warned passengers that delays and changes could continue beyond the flights directly impacted by the storm.

Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air issued separate advisories asking passengers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.

Air India cautioned that adverse weather could affect flights operating to and from Delhi. IndiGo also confirmed that bad weather had affected its schedule and said it was monitoring the situation.

SpiceJet warned that both arrivals and departures from Delhi could be affected, along with connecting flights linked to those services. Akasa Air similarly said severe weather had disrupted some flights across its network.

IMD Issues Heavy Rain Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued weather alerts for several parts of Delhi, warning of heavy and moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

According to the weather department, winds of around 30-40 kmph are also expected in several areas during the period of adverse weather.

The heavy-rain warning covers areas including South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi.

Moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning and similar wind speeds, has also been forecast in several parts of Central Delhi, South Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi.

Passengers Advised to Check Flight Status

With weather conditions remaining unsettled, passengers travelling through Delhi airport have been advised to confirm their flight schedules with their respective airlines before leaving for the airport.

The weather-related disruption could also have a knock-on effect on connecting flights, meaning passengers travelling to other destinations may face delays even if their original flight is not directly diverted.

Airlines have urged travellers to remain updated through official flight-status channels as weather conditions develop.
