Jharkhand Cancels Recruitment Exams After 16-Day Hunger Strike; Protesters Demand CBI Probe

A 16-day hunger strike by job aspirants in Jharkhand has ended after the state government agreed to cancel a controversial recruitment examination and announced wider action over alleged irregularities in government hiring tests.

Activist Devendra Nath Mahto ended his hunger strike at a hospital in Ranchi, where he had been receiving treatment after his health deteriorated during the protest.

However, the broader agitation has not completely ended. Protesters say they will continue demonstrating until the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is brought in to investigate alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.

Why Did the Jharkhand Protests Begin?

The protests began on July 25, with students and job aspirants raising allegations of manipulation and irregularities in government recruitment examinations.

The controversy initially intensified after results of a preliminary civil services examination were announced. Some candidates questioned the results after alleged answer sheets circulated online appeared inconsistent with the performance expected from successful candidates.

The allegations triggered demands for cancellation of the examination and an independent investigation.

Government Announces Cancellation of JSSC-CGL Exam

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren later announced that the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) examination would also be cancelled.

The government said its investigation had uncovered concerning information but did not provide further details while the inquiry remains underway.

The state also announced that examinations conducted by TDPL, a private agency involved in recruitment testing, would be cancelled.

Probe Into Exams Since 2014

In a wider move, the Jharkhand government announced an examination of recruitment tests conducted in the state since 2014.

The government also plans to establish a committee to recommend changes to the state's examination system and improve the recruitment process.

However, questions remain over what could happen to candidates who successfully cleared previous examinations if investigations uncover irregularities.

Protesters Still Want CBI Investigation

Although the government's announcements triggered celebrations among some protesters, several student leaders said their movement would continue.

Their main remaining demand is a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.

Student activist Ravindra Paswan said protesters would not leave the demonstration site until that demand is addressed.

Why Government Jobs Matter So Much in India

Government employment attracts millions of applicants across India because of its perceived job security, stable income and long-term benefits.

Recruitment examinations can therefore become highly competitive, with candidates often spending years preparing through coaching programmes.

Allegations of question-paper leaks, cheating or manipulation can have serious consequences for both candidates and government recruitment systems.

Political Pressure on Jharkhand Government

The controversy has also created political pressure for the Jharkhand government. The ruling alliance includes the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress and other parties, while the opposition BJP has backed the protesting candidates.

The cancellation of the examination has also reportedly triggered criticism from candidates who had already cleared the test and joined government service.

The dispute is now likely to focus on whether a CBI probe will be ordered and what action will follow from the state's wider investigation.
