Two POCSO Undertrials Escape From Srinagar Central Jail, Security Lapse Triggers Manhunt

A major security breach has been reported at Central Jail Srinagar, where two undertrial prisoners facing cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act reportedly escaped from custody.

The incident has raised questions over security arrangements at one of the Valley’s high-security prisons. Police have launched a search operation to trace the two accused and have circulated lookout notices seeking information about their whereabouts.

Two Undertrials Identified

According to the lookout notices issued by Kashmir Zone Police, the escaped prisoners have been identified as Mukhtar Ahmad Gujjar and Farman Khan.

Mukhtar Ahmad Gujjar, son of Mohammad Rafiq Gujjar and a resident of Sanglan in Chittergul, Anantnag, is wanted in connection with FIR No. 20/2026 registered at Soura Police Station.

The case involves provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Sections 3 and 4 of the POCSO Act.

The second accused, Farman Khan, son of Abdul Gani Khan and a resident of Sadanpora, Rafiabad, is wanted in connection with FIR No. 19/2026, registered at Lar Police Station.

His case also includes provisions of the BNS and Sections 3 and 4 of the POCSO Act, relating to penetrative sexual assault.

Police Launch Search Operation

Following the reported escape, Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a coordinated effort to locate both undertrials.

Lookout notices have been circulated, and authorities have appealed to members of the public to provide any credible information that could help investigators track down the accused.

Police have also announced a reward for information leading to their arrest.

Public Asked to Share Information

Authorities have urged anyone who may have information about the whereabouts or movements of either accused to contact the nearest police station or dial emergency number 112.

Police have cautioned the public to share information through official channels rather than attempting to intervene directly.

Internal Inquiry Underway

Alongside the search operation, authorities have initiated an internal inquiry into the security breach.

The investigation will examine how the two undertrials managed to escape from the high-security facility and whether any security procedures were breached or overlooked.

Police said efforts are continuing to locate and apprehend both escapees as quickly as possible.
