New York Overtakes Silicon Valley as North America’s Top Tech Jobs Market; Apple Cuts 200 Roles

New York City has overtaken Silicon Valley to become North America’s largest market for technology jobs, according to a recent report from commercial real estate firm CBRE.

The New York metropolitan area had around 394,000 technology workers at the end of 2025, compared with approximately 375,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the report found.

The shift has been driven in part by Wall Street’s growing demand for artificial intelligence talent, while continued layoffs across major Silicon Valley technology companies have reduced the region’s tech workforce.

Despite losing its lead in the total number of tech workers, the San Francisco Bay Area continues to rank first in CBRE’s broader Tech Talent ranking. The ranking takes into account factors such as technology wages, talent availability and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Apple Cuts Around 200 Jobs

Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly cutting roughly 200 jobs across teams connected to Siri and Vision Pro, two areas that have faced challenges for the company.

According to Bloomberg, the layoffs include employees working on gaming content for the Vision Pro headset, as well as a team developing immersive 3D videos. The company is also reducing staffing in parts of its Siri organization.

Apple’s digital assistant has struggled to keep pace with competing artificial intelligence systems developed by companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Apple has been working to significantly improve Siri, with Google reportedly partnering with the company as part of its efforts to upgrade the assistant.

Apple said the changes were part of a broader effort to realign teams and improve its products and services.

“While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles,” the company said, according to Bloomberg.

The reported cuts represent only a small portion of Apple’s workforce. The company had approximately 166,000 full-time employees as of September 2025, according to its most recently disclosed headcount.

The layoffs also come shortly before John Ternus is scheduled to become Apple’s new CEO. The leadership transition is expected to bring a fresh focus to Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy and several of its newer product initiatives.

The developments highlight the changing landscape of the technology industry, with AI reshaping hiring demand while major companies continue to restructure teams and prioritize investment in artificial intelligence.
